Here are the steps that I’ve found to give me reliable Korean (and Chinese) subtitles on a Mac, that now also work on Linux. But even when you select the text and change the format to UTF-8 it doesn’t always work. So what’s the problem? Well, as far as I can tell it’s something to do with the text encoding getting garbled.

They work fine on windows machines that are running a Korean version of windows, but I’ve hardly ever had them work first time in any other environment. Unfortunately, the sub files that I find on the internet have a tendency to be a bit garbled. Below is a guide I found for making the conversion happen on linux, but sublime text is cross-platform. I frequently have to open the sub file, convert the text to the proper encoding type and then save it as UTF-8.

The problem is most likely the encoding of the file that you've downloaded.
